Ethel Cain responds to criticism over United Healthcare CEO comments – Dazed

Earlier this month, Florida-raised singer Ethel Cain expressed sympathy for the alleged United Healthcare shooter Luigi Mangione, prompting a panel of Fox News hosts to call for a “boycott” of her music.
In a Tumblr post last night (January 21), the Preachers Daughter singer clarified her original comments and responded to the backlash. “I find it funny that conservatives try to paint me calling for the death and destruction of multi-billionaire CEOs as some radical ‘woke liberal’ standpoint,” she wrote. “It’s no secret I’m from a deeply conservative family in the sticks of Florida and I still grew up hearing ‘I fought the law and the law won’. The healthcare system has fucked each and every member of my family in a different way at one point or another, as is the case with pretty much every family in this scorched earth nation.”
Cain then proceeded to emphasise that the politicisation of the shooting had served to distract from common class issues, making an apparent dig at Trump’s fanbase. “Remember when the coal miners, grandfathers to the ‘trump-er hillbillies’ of Appalachia that everyone loves to write off as ignorant, fought tooth and nail for unionisation because the companies that were built off their labour didn’t give a shit if they lived or died? Since when has ‘upholding traditional values’ gone hand in hand with defending lawmakers and oil tycoons?” she wrote.
The Tumblr post follows the significant backlash that Cain received in response to her initial comments regarding the shooting, shared alongside the hashtag ‘#KillMoreCEOs’. “It’s simple,” she wrote, “you make them fear for their lives and hit them in the only place they hurt otherwise nothing will ever get done… It seems quite straightforward to me. ‘Violence is never the answer’ wrong. Sometimes it is.”
In an episode of Fox NewsThe Big Weekend Show aired on January 16, right-wing panellists Jason Chaffetz, Jackie DeAngelis, Anita Vogel and Guy Benson called her comments “sick” and “depraved”.
“The message there is violence is the answer,” said Benson. “You know who used that exact same mentality, that type of language? Terrorists.” DeAngelis added: “People need to boycott her.”

Egypt, Nigeria agree to strengthen agricultural cooperation – Daily News Egypt

Alaa Farouk, Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, met with Abubakar Kyari, Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, to discuss ways to deepen agricultural cooperation between the two countries. The meeting, which was also attended by Mustafa Al-Sayyad, Egypt’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture, explored potential collaborative projects across various agricultural sectors.
Minister Farouk emphasized the strong strategic relationship between Egypt and Nigeria, highlighting opportunities for cooperation in agricultural investment, particularly in the production and export of agricultural equipment. He noted that several Egyptian companies are already active in the Nigerian market and stressed the potential for further collaboration in livestock production, improved seed development, and the manufacturing of fertilizers and pesticides.
The Egyptian Minister also offered Egypt’s expertise in areas such as water conservation, agricultural training, capacity building, and innovation. He outlined Egypt’s commitment to sharing knowledge and advancing research efforts with Nigeria.

Additionally, Minister Farouk underscored the importance of private sector involvement in agriculture and food security. Drawing from Egypt’s experience, he referenced initiatives such as agricultural financing through the Agricultural Bank of Egypt, which operates over 1,150 branches nationwide. He also highlighted the Central Bank of Egypt’s initiatives, including promoting contract farming and the implementation of the “Farmer’s Card” system, a key part of Egypt’s digital transformation to improve agricultural input regulation.
 
Minister Kyari expressed strong support for all areas of collaboration discussed and endorsed the creation of a joint technical committee. The committee, consisting of representatives from both countries, will meet regularly to define priority areas for cooperation. The ministers also agreed on the importance of sending a delegation to Nigeria, including experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Agricultural Bank, and the private sector, to further refine and implement a roadmap for cooperation.
 
As part of the agreement, Minister Farouk announced that Egypt would host a delegation of 10 Nigerian experts for training at the International Agricultural Center in Egypt.
 
Following the meeting, the Nigerian Minister visited Egypt’s Digital Transformation Unit and the Farmer’s Card facility in the New Administrative Capital to review Egypt’s advancements in electronic services for agriculture. He also toured the Agricultural Bank of Egypt, where he was received by Sami Abdel Sadeq, Acting Chairman, and praised the bank’s progress in modern banking technologies.
 
Saad Mousa, Supervisor of Foreign Agricultural Relations at the Ministry of Agriculture, mentioned that the Nigerian Minister is scheduled to visit various agricultural research stations, farms, and private sector projects in Egypt. These sites produce and export agricultural goods, including agricultural equipment, to international markets such as the European Union.

New Threat to Public Health: Preventive Care on the Chopping Block – AZ Public Health Association

The Affordable Care Act is often thought of as a tool to just make health insurance more accessible and affordable. But it’s a lot more than that.
There are lots of things in the Act about health insurance coverage (and hospital reimbursements) to keep people healthier (and less expensive).
One cornerstone of the ACA is its requirement that health insurance plans cover a range of preventive services without any patient co-pays… services like screenings, immunizations, behavioral counseling, and medications designed to catch or prevent diseases early—before they become costly and life-threatening.
The preventive services that private plans and Medicaid expansion programs must cover are based on those that have an A or B level recommendation by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and vaccines recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.
Those task forces use rigorous criteria to make sure all of their recommendations are evidence based. The US Supreme Court has now accepted a case that threatens to overturn this important coverage requirement.
Those recommendations are grounded in rigorous, evidence-based research.
But now, this foundation of public health and cost control is under threat. Last week the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear Braidwood Management Inc. v. Becerra, a case that could strike down the ACA’s preventive care coverage requirements.
If the Court overturns these provisions, the consequences for public health could be expensive in more ways than one.
Without guaranteed coverage without a co-pay many people will skip screenings, vaccines, or preventive medications because of the co-pay… leading more undiagnosed cancers (or later, deadlier diagnoses), untreated chronic diseases, and preventable infections—all of which would result in higher rates of hospitalizations and emergency treatments.
The ripple effects would be felt across the health care system, driving up costs for insurers, employers, and taxpayers alike.
Preventive services aren’t just a public health priority—they’re a financial one. By catching diseases early or preventing them entirely, these services save money in the long run.
For example, a colonoscopy that detects and removes precancerous polyps is far cheaper than chemotherapy for advanced colorectal cancer.
Overturning these provisions would disproportionately harm low-income individuals and communities of color, worsening health inequities.
This isn’t just about insurance coverage—it’s about maintaining a healthier, more equitable, and cost-effective health care system.
The Supreme Court’s decision will shape the future of public health. Let’s hope they choose to uphold the ACA’s preventive care protections—for the health of individuals, families, and the entire nation.
Sadly, I’m not optimistic.

If you’re not a fan of CrossFit classes and the aching knees wouldn’t cope with a run, your health is not doomed. In fact, there’s another way to add years to your life without ever wearing trainers or setting foot in a gym. Daily movement, from digging the garden to vacuuming the house, is akin to a “longevity jab”, says recent research published in the British Medical Journal. So by increasing physical activity, we can add up to 11 years to our lifespan.
It’s not the first research to show that staying active is a potential lifesaver. A 2022 study by The University of Sydney found that three to four one-minute bursts of energetic activity during daily tasks is associated with large reductions in the risk of premature death, particularly from cardiovascular disease. If you’re prone to pains and strains, this can be enormously helpful.
“Incidental movement promotes cardiovascular health and enhances metabolic health, while reducing the risk of musculoskeletal issues and injuries,” says physiotherapist Clara Kervyn.
While 86 per cent of us believe we should be doing more exercise, according to research by Deep Heat Deep Freeze, pain from injuries like ankle, knee, and leg strain is proving a barrier, with 48 per cent having experienced an exercise-related injury. “Movement doesn’t have to be in the gym,” says personal trainer Hannah Verdier, “and short bursts that raise your heart rate have been shown to be good for you.
“When you walk upstairs, you’re working your quads, glutes and other leg muscles and boosting your hip mobility every time you lift your leg up to the next step,” says Kervyn. Research by the University of East Anglia and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Foundation Trust showed that frequent stair climbing is linked with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. This includes heart attack, heart failure and stroke, and a 24 per cent reduced risk of dying early from any cause. “Running up the stairs is even better as it further increases your heart rate,” says Verdier. Your muscles use a lot of power with effects similar to doing lunges and squats”.
And don’t get lazy on escalators. “Every time you walk up an escalator instead of standing still, you’re working your core, glutes and leg muscles and raising your heart rate,” says Kervyn.
“Gardening is a great way to exercise – pushing the lawnmower, pulling the weeds, squatting and lifting are all components of a solid gym workout and raise your heart rate,” says Verdier. While one lengthy repetitive movement like weeding is good for you, try switching between different tasks to get a full-body workout. “If you can add, say, pruning as well, that’s even better, as you’re changing position and reaching up, using arm and shoulder muscles. Try switching to your non-dominant arm sometimes to ensure you’re strengthening both,” Kervyn adds.
Need to pop out to the shops? Leave the car at home. “Integrate grocery shopping into your incidental movement regime. If possible, walk to a shop that’s a good distance away, and carry your shopping home,” says Kervyn.
In fact, instead of doing a big weekly shop in the car or ordering it online for home delivery, do small daily shops. Weight-bearing exercise strengthens your bones and muscles. “Having to go shopping every day gives you an excuse to get out and walk, and carrying bags will boost your arm and shoulder muscles,” says Kervyn.
Almost half of women and two fifths of men have confessed to being so unfit they would get out of breath running for the bus, but it’s worth the effort. The benefits of 30-second bursts of running include improving overall cardio respiratory fitness, blood pressure, body composition and insulin sensitivity. “Just make sure you’re wearing the right footwear, ideally trainers, so you don’t injure yourself,” says Verdier.
And if running is beyond you, skip the bus and walk where possible, Verdier suggests. “If walking 10,000 steps feels too daunting, try adding 1,000 to what you already do – and up the pace. One study found that 7,000 is enough to help you live longer, which is much more doable.” Even a daily 10-minute brisk walk could add a year to your life. “Get off the bus a couple of stops before yours in order to increase your step count,” says Kervyn.
You’re using and strengthening different muscles when you’re baking, cooking and doing the dishes.“Your shoulders, chest, upper back and abdominal muscles are being worked every time you mix, beat or reach your arm out for something and bring it towards you. These movements boost your flexibility and if you’re doing them vigorously, you’re also increasing your heart rate and promoting blood flow,” says Kervyn.
“When you’re reaching over to clean cupboards or windows, instead of standing on a step ladder to reach up high, try managing without and reaching that bit further, working your shoulder mobility,” Kervyn adds.
Working on your balance and posture to prevent falls is essential as you get older. Tasks such as cleaning and drying your clothes give you plenty of opportunities to do so. “Are you using your core when you lift the laundry? Engage those abdominal muscles as well as your pelvic floor,” says Verdier. “Every time you pick something up from low down you’re doing a squat, using your legs, back and arms. So, it’s a bit of a full body workout,” says Kervyn. “And if you’re hanging socks on the lowest rung of your clothes airer or folding them into the bottom drawer, try squatting with the weight in your heels,” says Verdier.
If you’re cleaning the house, leaning down to vacuum underneath the sofa or mop under the table is enormously beneficial. “You’re moving up and down numerous times, which requires mobility and flexibility. A good long vacuum or mopping stint promotes better blood circulation, and better movement throughout our body and metabolic system, while burning calories. Intensify the effect by giving yourself a time limit and doing it a bit faster. If you’re hoovering the carpet, maybe do a few faster strokes to get your heart rate up, or a few longer strokes, increasing your mobility as well,” says Kervyn.
We should aim to get up out of our chairs every 30 minutes to move around and break up prolonged sitting time. And even simple sit-to-stand movements use a whole host of muscles including your ankles, thighs, core, hips and backside. They also help to improve your balance, stability, and control, reducing the risk of falls. If possible, avoid using your hands to steady you when standing.
Standing up from being down on the floor and vice versa is another movement to incorporate into your day. “This movement uses a whole range of different muscle groups and improves mobility. Playing with toddlers down at their level gives you plenty of opportunities to repeat this movement, while improving your dexterity and keeping your mind active, helping your mental wellbeing too,” says Kervyn.

DAR ES SALAAM: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has pledged commitment to supporting artists in the nation, particularly filmmakers to enhance Tanzania’s tourism and cultural industries.
Speaking during the launch of Rajab Kahali alias Harmonize’s new album in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, President Samia said she would be travelling with artists during her work visits overseas to provide them with exposure and networking opportunities with other artists and arts stakeholders.
This effort seeks to use the global exposure of these tours to highlight and promote Tanzania’s rich cultural heritage.

“When I travel overseas, I am usually accompanied by a group of business people. Now I would like to make a shift and travel with artists. This will depend on my schedule and the destination,” President Samia revealed.
The Head of State highlighted through those work visit the artists will have the opportunity to study and promote tourism, arts and culture.
“Whenever there are festivals during my travels, I will go with artists. More significantly, if I am planning a trip abroad I will try to find training options for our artists, particularly actresses,” she stated.
The President said that during her next visit to South Korea, she would prioritise obtaining training opportunities for Tanzanian artists, acknowledging Korea’s advanced status in the entertainment business.
“We are going to Korea, and as you know, they specialise at acting. Their shows dominate our television screens, therefore we will seek training opportunities, and I am confident we will succeed,” she stated.
President Samia also advised artists to invest in a variety of areas to protect their futures in case they are no longer active in their occupations.

She urged them to maximise their present incomes and influence while they still have the energy and capacity to perform.
Minister for culture, Arts and Sports, Damas Ndumbaro, said the government had increase budget for arts and culture for more than eight folds.
He said that President Samia is a major supporter of artists and has established a specific fund to help them.
“The President has created a Culture and Arts Fund specifically to support artists in acquiring training and loans to enhance their craft,” Ndumbaro said.
He indicated that President Samia allocated 4bn/- to this fund between July last year and April of this year.
“Many artists have obtained loans from this foundation and started various initiatives to develop and enhance their work. Some artists have set up studios, purchased musical equipment, and undertaken diverse artistic projects,” Ndumbaro said.
He noted that the Ministry’s budget now includes considerable financial resources for artists, providing on-going support for the growth and development of Tanzania’s cultural and creative scene.
President Samia Suluhu’s deliberate action illustrates her commitment to promoting arts and culture in Tanzania, giving artists the platforms and resources they need to prosper and contribute to the country’s worldwide image.
